MCX Solutions Expertise

Mission-critical broadband is far more than a network. Critical Insights brings deep, hands-on knowledge across the entire 3GPP MCX eco-system — the infrastructure and core network services, control room and dispatch solutions, rugged devices and their accessories, and the MCX applications themselves: MCPTT, MCData and MCVideo.

That knowledge is practical, not theoretical. We have led MCX solution workstreams on national programme bids, provided business analysis for MCX application sales and onboarding into live public safety environments, and supported device market engagement that shaped national procurement requirements.

Across the eco-system

  • MCX infrastructure and core network services
  • Control room and dispatcher integration
  • Rugged devices and mission-critical accessories
  • MCX applications — MCPTT, MCData and MCVideo

How we help

  • Solution architecture and bid leadership
  • Requirements definition and procurement support
  • Vendor and solution evaluation, onboarding and assurance
  • 3GPP / ETSI standards alignment and interoperability

MCX Coverage & Performance

Replicating — let alone surpassing — the coverage and performance of established narrowband TETRA and P25 networks is one of the hardest challenges in the transition to broadband. The UK's Airwave network has delivered critical push-to-talk group voice for twenty-five years, and although that is essentially all it does, it does it exceptionally well: performance holds up even when scaling to very large, all-informed situational-awareness groups with thousands of emergency responders managing major multi-agency events and incidents.

That scaling behaviour challenges LTE/5G MCX solutions because of a fundamental difference in how the technologies work: MCX group calls rely on individually addressed call-setup signalling and bearer establishment for every participant, where TETRA and P25 use broadcast signalling and unacknowledged call setup. Understanding — and engineering around — that difference is essential to delivering broadband critical communications that frontline users can trust.

The challenge

  • Matching coverage refined over decades of narrowband operation
  • Maintaining group-call performance at mass-event scale
  • Fundamentally different signalling and bearer models
  • Assurance across complex operational environments

Our pedigree

  • Co-developed the "Real World" coverage & performance testing methodology behind the 2002 Airwave service re-launch
  • Coverage Communications Lead on the UK's ESN programme
  • TETRA coverage and performance validation worldwide

TETRA/P25 to 3GPP LTE/5G MCX Transition

Adopting new digital communications technology is hard enough; doing it while maintaining business-as-usual operations is the real challenge. For emergency services there is no tolerance for downtime — frontline communications must keep working throughout testing, adoption and migration, without exception.

Critical Insights has guided exactly these transitions for more than twenty-five years: from analogue to TETRA at the dawn of digital critical communications, and today from TETRA to 3GPP LTE/5G MCX on programmes like the UK's Emergency Services Network. We help organisations plan and prove every step — trials and pilots, interworking and parallel running, operational readiness gates and fallback arrangements — so confidence is earned before, not after, the switch.

Transition challenges

  • Zero tolerance for operational downtime
  • Parallel running and TETRA/P25–MCX interworking
  • Device, fleetmap and control room migration
  • Building frontline user confidence in new technology

How we help

  • Transition strategy and migration roadmaps
  • Trial and pilot design with operationally meaningful acceptance criteria
  • Operational readiness assessment and go/no-go gates
  • User engagement, training strategy and assurance
